Fields of Interest

Dr. Boaz Tamir holds two doctoral degrees. He received his first doctorate from the Department of Mathematics at the Weizmann Institute of Science for his work on representations of unitary algebraic groups over p-adic fields (a field within number theory and Lie group theory), under the supervision of Steve Gelbart. After his doctorate, he developed an interest in quantum physics, relativity theory, and philosophy of science. He received his second doctorate in 2008 from Bar-Ilan University, from the Science, Technology and Society Program, for his work on quantum simulation and quantum computing, under the supervision of Avshalom Elitzur.

His areas of interest include: Lie groups, representation theory, p-adic valuation theory, information theory, quantum physics, special and general relativity, quantum computing, quantum information, DNA computing, bioinformatics, philosophy of science, and the history of computing and computers.

In recent years, he has published several papers on group representations, quantum algorithms, quantum information, bioinformatics, and philosophy of science.

Additionally, Tamir teaches at Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design on the connections between arts and sciences, and he is one of the founders of the new institute "Iyar" - the Israel Institute for Advanced Research.

In 2011, he was awarded the Pitowsky Prize from the Department of History and Philosophy of Science at the Hebrew University for his recent work in the fields of quantum computing and quantum information.
